Flo Draschler, pour un look d'enfer

Group Abaim veut des tenues d’été pour ses concerts de fin d’année.
Le Groupe à fait appel encore une fois au stylisteFlo Draschler. Elle avait crée les magnifiques costumes pour le concert-lancement de ReKreasyon-31 ti Parfin nou memwar - en Mars dernier.
Flo nous a emmené avec elle chercher des trésors, dans les dédales bondées des ruelles de la capitale Port Louis, histoire de nous montrer comment s’y prendre quand on n’a pas beaucoup de temps pour créer.

En route pour la grande tournée des magasins et.... des trottoirs …

On s’est touvé un oasis de paix, au beau milieu de la jungle de Port Louis. Assises à l’ombre d’un manguier nous soufflons un bon coup, avant d’avaler quelques “dholl puris” pour un regain d’énergie...

….Avant que Flo n’aille griller une clope .

Dernier point de la journée avant de rentrer, fatiguées mais super contentes de cette experience.

Rencontre avec un 3eme type - Alain Permal

Simplicité et douceur, il flottait comme un vent de quiétude sur ABAIM ce Jeudi 5 Novembre. Pourtant, nous avions la visite d'un Grand! Avec sa voix de velours, et son corps qui ne demandait qu'a se déhancher sur le Ti Marmit dont il nous dit le plus grand bien, osant jusqu'a faire quelques tours de la plaine pou enn zwe larou! Et de nous etonner! Et de nous apprendre! Et nous seduire pour son humanisme et ses émotions a fleur de peau.

Rencontre avec Alain Permal, célebre chanteur qui a, entre autres, enregistré 'Sega Bélo" dans les années 60, qu'il
a herité de sa grand-mère, qui l'avait entendu d'autres personnes. C'est un morceau de notre héritage culturel, qu'Abaim a repris sur Re-Kreasyon -31 Ti Parfin nou Patrimwann. Merci Alain pour cette parole, tellement importante pour nos enfants, nos jeunes, notre atelier de musique ! Pour l'ile Maurice entiére! Pour l'humanité!

At the core of our education system...

The international hearing on the harm done in schools by the suppression of the mother tongue organized by Ledikasyon Pou Travayer , saw some 47 testimony from a wide range of witnesses. Excerpts from the Findings delivered yesterday by the jury who had to analyse those experiences and specifically the ham resulting from the neglect of the mother tongue in the school.


*Mauritian Kreol appears to have established itself as the national language of Mauritius.
*Learning a second or a foreign language and at the same time learning other subjects through a second or foreign language makes the life of the young Mauritian child almost unbearable.
*The language policy adopted in primary education has dramatic consequences. The rate of failing after nine years of schooling is astoundingly high.
*Mauritius uses mainly English or French as the main medium of instruction, even if Kreol of Bhojpuri may be used orally. This is known as submersion education and it violates the right to education.

THE PRESENT EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN MAURITIUS OFTEN VIOLATES CHILDREN’S RIGHT TO EDUCATION.

IT OFTEN PREVENTS ACCESS TO EDUCATION.

IT DISCRIMINATES CHILDREN ON THE BASIS OF LANGUAGE AND IT DOES NOT GRANT CHILDREN EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAW.

IT CAN CAUSE AND OFTEN CAUSES SERIOUS HARM TO CHILDREN; THIS HARM CAN HAVE CONSEQUENCES FOR THEM DURING THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

Hi Michael,

Well it was a great and intense moment to have you for some minutes with us together sharing what we’re both fond of. As you could have remarked we were very impressed by the way you ‘play’ (if I can say) with the tones of your voice.

Furthermore what has impressed us was the variation in your voice and the way you do to make it a honey and harmonious melody for our ears. I must say that it would be nice again to have a person like you who knows a wide range on different way of singing and a personal touch to embellish the whole thing.


We have mostly liked the way you communicate with your audience. We have also remarked that for you it is a prime factor to have the sense of touching certainly not morally as every and each singer does but for you it is important to have an appeal with your audience and this is done by the sense of touching physically. It was quite a short moment but let us tell you that it was amazing and marvelous thing to have you, to benefit from each tiny minute and most important of all to learn from people like you.

Note: The German, world-wide known bass-baritone Michael Schopper has built himself a reputation during concerts and tours in all of Europe, South and North America, Israel and Japan; his varied activities include numerous concerts around the globe (under the batons of Karl Richter and Fritz Reiner), television broadcasts and many recordings for major labels. He is in Mauritius to play Nourabad in les 'Pecheurs de Perles" for Mauritius Opera'09.
His repertory encompasses virtually the entire song production of the European Baroque and Romantic eras, a large number of operatic roles, and the entire oratorio literature from the Baroque to contemporary music.
Michael Schopper taught at the University of music and performing arts in Munic and at the Academy for Early Music in Brixen/Bressanone. Subsequently he was appointed professor of voice and historical performance at the University of Music in Frankfurt am Main.

Disponible désormais, dans nos librairies et points de vente de disques compacts, un véritable trésor musical et patrimonial, une source de ravissement.
Il sagit dun livret dune centaine de pages, illustré par Laval Ng, imprimé par Précigraph, comprenant deux disques compacts, nous permettant de réentendre 31 ségas, ayant déjà bercé notre enfance.Les auteurs- promoteurs en sont le groupe musical Abaim. Nul besoin de le présenter car son succès indélébile, « Ti- Marmite » dit, mieux que tout, le bien que nous pensons de lui. Il récidive, aujourdhui, avec encore plus de bonheur, tant sont réussis le livret, les disques compacts et leur contenu, à valeur historique, pédagogique, sociologique.

Abaim, la chanteuse Marousia en tête, a la bonne idée de traduire en français et en anglais les textes en créole . La traduction est si habilement faite, que francophones et anglophones peuvent, sils le désirent, chanter nos ségas. Mettre le livret « Ré- Kréasyon » dAbaim à la disposition de nos enfants, c'est leur permettre de se réconcilier avec notre identité plurielle mais aussi commune et définitivement enrichissante.Le livret « Ré- Kréasyon » dAbaim revalorise notre séga, en lui restituant des paroles inspirées, intelligentes, anecdotiques, moralisatrices, nous consolant des « ti- la- la, ti- la- la » litaniques du séga « lève zipe » .

Au frontispice de son chef- doeuvre, Abaim nous dit sa fierté de pouvoir ajouter un autre joyau à son désir de partager la richesse de notre folklore musical.Pour reprendre un vocabulaire propre au rugby, disons que ce nouvel essai de valorisation de notre séga unificateur devient un trésor musical.

Nos remerciements vont aux mécènes finançant cette initiative : le groupe sucrier Médine et la Banque Commerciale dEtat. Ils aident Abaim à nous aider à reprendre possession dun héritage qui nous appartient. Ne le faisons toutefois pas du bout des doigts et des lèvres comme fait notre gouvernement à propos de Tromelin et des Chagos. Reprenons possession de notre héritage musical avec toute l'énergie dont nous sommes capables. En écoutant les 31 ségas revalorisés par Abaim, nous prouvons à nous- mêmes que nous sommes intelligents pour savourer un patrimoine musical heureusement retrouvé. Le vol de notre patrimoine, voilà le danger qui nous menace si nous ne savons pas le sauvegarder. Montons surtout la garde pour empêcher toute prostitution de notre séga. Nos visiteurs étrangers ont raison : notre île Maurice demeure un paradis, pouvant transcender nos misères personnelles. Notre folklore musical, notre séga, virevolte aux quatre coins du pays. Grâce à Abaim, nous comprenons pourquoi dautres peuples nous l'envient. Notre séga a toujours raison : tout patrimoine perdu a toujours un goût, ou plutôt une amertume Nous devons réapprendre à nous contenter de l'essentiel, de savoir vivre dans « ène pti lacase » , dormir sur une natte malgache, se contenter d'une calebasse mais pleine darack pour le « banané » . Faisons donc échec aux abus de la société de consommation envahissante. Copeaux de bois ou bobonne de gaz importe peu. L'important cest que le séga nous réchauffe le coeur à jamais . Voilà quelques traits de sagesse typiquement mauricienne que nous pouvons acquérir à lécoute des 31 ségas chantés par Abaim, 31 parfums de notre mémoire musicale.

Ce groupe est fier de la « goutte deau » quil apporte, dit- il, à « l'océan » de notre patrimoine. Nous lui disons ceci : il y a des gouttes d'eau qui ressemblent aux perles les plus fines.

« Ré- Kréasyon » d'Abaim est le diamant perdu et que son propriétaire retrouve avec une joie évangélique.

Abaim donne une leçon de savoir faire à tous ceux qui, à Maurice, possèdent le pouvoir mais sans savoir quoi faire.

C'est les vacances et Tania avait esperer une fête. Elle en a parlé lors du rassemblement du Samedi 18 juillet dernier. Tout un chacun fut emballé. Rendez- vous était pris pour le Samedi suivant, le 25 … Ce fut une Sacrée Soirée qui restera dans les mémoires pour longtemps encore.

The little boy and the Maravann.

I had never seen him before though … he looked just like the other little heroes I meet every “Saturday Care” and other times when I stroll throughout the Site. I recalled.. he was already there when I reached Sant ABAIM that Saturday…. a month ago.

Early that day, an enormous tent was planted in the middle of the yard and the sound equipments were sitting there longing to cry out some loud music. Jake, Laura, and the little guys greeted me as I walked my way through the yard. Inside our Centre, Chantal was busy getting the karay ready to cook the nicest local snacks, gato pima and others… but where was Zak ? There, running in all directions, ... Quite a typical atmosphere of a normal activity day waiting to be borne at Abaim’s centre , Colonel Maingard Road – Beau Bassin.

During all this time, through his little black eyes, my little friend was impregnating himself of this ambiance. At times, he would leave his chair and help out freely with some minor task…

And then, the musical instruments were brought from the centre to the podium for sound check purposes and I saw his gaze, It just froze… I saw him walking straight towards the guitar, and I felt a shiver… a guitar is so delicate you know… a knock down and it can be finished…but what was he doing… No, he just passed off the guitar, behind the drums…. Was it the Chinese keyboard that attracted him … Oops ! Ah Noo will go wild … he re-appeared, now behind the keyboards .


And looked at it for some seconds, bowed down, took it in his hands, and slowly moved it from left to right, to hear the song of it’s flower beads…. Held it one side and swap it to the other, again and again, the song of this beautiful percussion, the song of the “Maravann”… getting chaotic sound now… well, it’s not an easy instrument to play as it seems.

“Please leave it now… we can’t hear ourselves sound-checking” shouted Zak.

By that time, tables were set in the yard for the 1st activity to start – the making of musical instruments out of recycled materials… papers, cans...

Little heads suddenly gathered around the tables and the session began… First, he looked from a distance and then walking down slowly came nearer the table, pooked at what was going up and could not resist . He made up his ravann with the help of Natacha, Kelly and Aurelie and even draw the logo of ABAIM on it… added his name underneath, looked at it proudly and went back under the tent to grasp a look at his maravann.

In the meantime, guests and members poured in.

Playing the masters of ceremonies, Quincy and pal Julie entertained the public on what was going in the workshops…. Shirley Chumroo from the MBC –Radio was also there making frequent directs over the air…

The children were the stars that day. Ti Moumoune, Jefferson, Megane, Aurelie, Quincy , Delvine went solo.... big applause from the crowd.

Christopher Amurat gave us a special version of I’m Yours – the tube from Mraz… and Daniel Delord sang one of the finest sega I recalled from my childhood memories … “Celia” accompanied by our youngsters… “ Pa laraz” Daniel!
The magic of music from Marclaine, renowned traditional instrumentalist, gave his special version of Ti Fler Fane on the Chun Ren…. Chorus’d by the crowd…
accompanied by Kelly who could not help taking her ravann. 2 generation – 1 spirit
Ah-Noo and friends from the Chinese Cultural Centre followed with Salame Bismilla and Gato Koko, played on Chinese instruments…. A delight! There were very young children as well as adults and even mauritians studying abroad on holidays in the group…
Who else …. Christopher with father Judex Grenade and pals, all wearing Ray Bans and beating the drums like 1 person, offered a pot-pourri of sega…
Richard Beaugendre accompanied Daniella through a guitar instrumental for a slam and offered some of his deep-rooted songs. He was joined later on by a talented trumpeter for a magical improvisation.
Karen and group “Zanfan Lakaz”, nice name hey ! took over for some delicacies.
When Marcel Poinen offered us Anita, accompanied by ABAIM crew, my little friend joined us. Without forgetting his Maravann… choking all the beads… I had to tell him to cool down every now and then because the rhythm was off-beat… I hated to do that …’cause he was looking so sad, but he obeyed ,well just for few seconds... before increasing the tempo again… That was delirious…

Watch out for the little boy and his maravnn... whilst Ah-Noo and friends from the Chinese Cultural Centre jams with Group ABAIM.

It was already 4 o’clock and we had sadly to end off this day.
I saw him walking away – happy with the others, and suddenly.. couldn’t help himself to turn back running to the “maravann’ grasping it with a last embrace.

Another of those “ordinary’ celebrations of Special days… No. I guess no ordinary celebration.

Visite d’une grande dame chez ABAIM

Une guitare en héritage

“Donn lame rode”, un des morceaux phares de l’album ReKreasyon fait état de deux pantalons d’un 'sieur Karojala qui auraient été volés alors qu’ils étaient à sécher tranquillement sur la corde à linge. C’était une de ces situations tragi-comiques qui survenait à l’époque ou une même cour abritait plusieurs maisons.
Et puis au deuxiéme couplet , nombreux sont ceux qui ont été surpris que l’histoire continue par un épisode de vol, qui s’est passé cette fois-ci … chez abaim !… Cette actualisation naturelle démontre aussi la pertinence de ce type de travail dans le contexte moderne.

Cette chanson n’est pas tombée dans l’oreille d’une sourde.
Sarojini Seeneevassen qui assistait à notre concert-lancement
l'a entendue, en a été touchée et a decidé de nous faire cadeau
de son HOHNER qui date de plus de 30 ans.

C’est une guitare qui porte une histoire.
La dernière personne à l’avoir eu était Jos Henry, l’auteur-compositeur-interprête de Cousin-Cousine et qui nous a quitté il y quelque temps de cela.
Depuis Sarojini l’a recupéré et nous la laisse en héritage.

Quel magnifique cadeau.. merci. Abaim en prendra bien soin.

Rappelons que Sarojini a beaucoup contribué à la vulgarisation de la ravanne qu’elle jouait en compagnie de Fanfan, dans les années 80.
Parmi les autres cordes à son arc, figurent la peinture, la composition et l’interprétation.

Waoh! un beau souvenir d'Abaim... ReKreasyon signée par tous les musiciens et chanteurs... et présenté par Ti Moumoune.

Le site web d’Abaim piraté deux fois en une semaine

C’est avec beaucoup de tristesse que nous avons constaté que notre site http://www.abaim.info a été piraté à deux reprises au cours de la semaine passée.
A l’heure qu’il est, il n’est toujours pas rétabli. Qui peut nous en vouloir?

Il serait utile de se rappeller que le site d’ Abaim comportait depuis l’année dernière une page de lecture et de téléchargement gratuit du single ‘banane’.

"D’Abaim, je ne connaissais que “Ti Marmit” et sans porter grande attention. Ce Samedi 7 Mars, j’ai été invitée par des amis à venir au lancement du nouvel album et c’était l’émerveillement. Ce concert a été l’une des plus belles que j’ai vue et entendue. Je me suis sentie Mauricienne, découvert mes racines au son de la ravanne qui me pénétrait jusqu’au tripes, entouré de l’enthousiasme du public.
