Last Saturday, Rose Hill Stadium was full of children celebrating their rights. They came by bus, on their own or with various organizations, such as the S.O.S villages’, scouts’ movements, Terre de Paix ...

What are childrens’ rights and why do children have rights ?

Survival: children first and foremost have a right to life - to have their basic physical needs met for food, shelter, safety, and health care.

Protection: they also need to be protected from injury and harm, not only physical but also emotional.

Development: they need all the things that will help them to grow and develop. They need friends and family, love and laughter. They need fresh air and safe places to play. They need stories and music, schools and libraries and all that stimulates the mind. They need to practise their culture and religion and to develop a sense of awe and wonder.

Participation: they need to share in the life of their family, school, community and nation, to take responsibilities and to have a voice.

Participation’s rights ? At Abaim this is a true concept !
Children can participate. They can make decisions.
They can take responsibility for themselves and others.
They can contribute usefully to family and community life.

What participation is not ?
• Children do not participate by merely attending a function. That is decoration and not participation.
• They do not participate by being merely consulted when adults make all the decisions (For example the children have no say concerning what questions they will be asked, how they will express their answers, and what will be done with the results.)
• They do not participate if they are manipulated so that they express views that are not genuinely their own, nor rooted in their own experience.
• It is merely tokenism if they are asked to give their opinion as representing "the children" when they are not properly briefed nor have the opportunity to discuss the issues with the very peers they are meant to be representing.
