Special Saturday care activity

Saturday 28th April 2007. The children attending the Saturday care project were exposed to what it is all about May Day. This was done mainly through some specific songs from the abaim repertoire. Children after singing the songs were prompted to revisit them through the contextualisation of the song in the first instance and secondly through attempts at discovering the various trades and occupations referred to in the songs.

This cultural activity proved fruitful in that it clearly showed that a lot of job occupations are by now escaping the collective memory of the population. Children and even adults no longer know what it is to be a “debarder”, a “kolom”, a “sirdar” or a “chokra”.

The most promising inference however remains the sustained interest of children to know more about these occupations, the more so that they encounter these occupations in the folk songs abaim is now trying to conserve and disseminate. This activity lasted for more than three hours without the children getting bored in any way!

At the Unions’ forum

Abaim participated through a musical performance in the forum organized by the Unions on May Day 07 at the place Taxi in Beau-Bassin. The musical group contributed to raise consciousness on a number of issues pertaining to the history of workers’ struggle from slavery to modern times (400 kanon pu kolon), to the precarious conditions experienced by factory workers with factory closures (kadna), to hardship experiences by workers in sugar cane fields (lalinn kann), to opposing inhuman conditions throughout history (rezistans). The audience was gratified as well with a song composed collectively with children and in which the so many tools used by workers find their way for recognition.

Une premiere pour Abaim - Live recording in Beau Bassin

Avez vous jamais remarqué le temps qu’il fait quand le soleil se couche ! Je vais vous raconter… Il faut simplement y prêter attention, attendez que tout se calme et mettez vous dans un endroit tranquille. Quand vient le soir, le vent se met à nous chanter sa chanson ou alors il décide tout simplement de se coucher aussi. Mais attention s’il a choisit la seconde option, il ne s’endort quand même pas tout de suite. Non, Il prend son temps, joue à cache cache avec la pluie, valse avec les étoiles, caresse les feuilles des arbres et tout doucement, comme à regret, épuisé par tant de luttes, apaisé, il s’endort.

Et c’est alors que nous pouvons commencer !

A la tombée de la nuit, j’ai appris (à essayer) d’écouter le vent , à espérer qu’il se calme,… j’ai appris que le vent pouvait être indésirable surtout quand on fait un enregistrement live.

Recording Engineer: Philippe de Magnée from Belgium was introduced to us some 5 days before. Wonderful guy who can speak Kreol as a Mauritian, who has an impressive catalogue of the hits of the 80’s and what not… He was the one who recorded Krapo Kriye and nearly all of the protests songs of those years. We talked to him of that project of an album and of our dream to have some of our songs recorded live. We talked of our quest to get the authentic ravanne sound. We talked of our love for olden and golden folk songs of that country of ours. We talked of the weather… Very important. We talked of so many things and in the end we settled on a date for the recording. So much for those of you who like roots music. You sure would be happy guys at the end of this year.

Great news, Abaim is now connected! Was about time… It’s been quite a while that the buoyant thinking has been going on… with our members, sympathizers, in the centre, at home, on the road, during our activities… The growth of our information society has made us increasingly aware of the need to share and maintain our vision of the World through our different actions, activities and songs.

Do we really need a blog? Globalization has in this perspective, made true it’s less dangerous part - to unite the planet.. We’ve been very attentive to your numerous requests: we’ve heard and seen Mauritian diaspora from around the world ( heuuuu!! and in Mauritius too) looking for lyrics of “Montayn Long” ,querying whether Grup Abaim is the author of “Kanar”, wondering where to buy the CD of “Tizan ar so 8 frer” or congratulating Abaim for the banjo guitar’s revival through “16 Ti Morso nu lanfans”. Or you may have wanted to simply drop a word of support. So that’s it - let’s blog.

Abaim is an organization which has always arouse curiosity about who we are and where we come from and what we want. This forum respond therefore to a need to promote discussion about people, their environment, the Earth bio cultural diversity,… in a word about Sustainable Development for all.
